Application Information

Eligibility

This institute is designed principally for full-time or part-time teachers and librarians in public, charter, independent, and religiously affiliated schools, as well as homeschooling parents. Museum educators and other K-12 school system personnel—such as administrators, substitute teachers, and curriculum developers—are also eligible to participate.

To be considered eligible, applicants must submit a complete application as indicated at the link above. Applicants may only attend one summer institute funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities each summer.

Individuals may not apply to the institute whose co-director is a family member, is affiliated with the prospective applicant’s institution, or is someone with whom the prospective applicant has previously studied.

Participant Selection

A selection committee, comprised of the two directors and colleagues, at least one of whom is a 6-12 teacher, will evaluate all completed applications to select a group of participants and to identify alternates.

The committee will look to assemble a cohort with diverse experiences and perspectives by assessing the impact of this institute on their teaching, and willingness to engage in multiple conversations about challenging and uncomfortable topics. Some institute spaces will be reserved for those who have been teaching for five years or less.

Some topics may be of a sensitive nature and we urge all participants to be open-minded, conscientious, and willing to engage their colleagues and our invited scholars.
